Born in Northern Ireland, as were Van Morrison and Liam Neeson.   I studied physics at Manchester University, did a post-baccalaureate teaching certificate at Leeds University and then completed a PhD in biophysics at Keele University. I did a post-doc stint at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich before teaching at the Science University of Malaysia; researching at Monash University, Australia; and teaching at the University of the South Pacific, Fiji and Oxford Brookes University.  Not content with all this traveling, I moved to Kuwait as Professor of Radiologic Sciences for what was supposed to be a 3-year stint, and stayed 12 years. And from there to Sunny California in 2002, where I'm Professor of Applied Physics and Medical Imaging. I'm trying to live a more laid-back life-style, but I haven't really succeeded ... I'm thinking of taking up painting to get in touch with my inner self!

I wrote a (rather good) book on image processing, which was published in 2009 by Cambridge University Press. It has garnered very enthusiastic reviews (check it out on Amazon ...). It's being translated into Korean and a softback version is on sale in India ... can't be bad, right? You can see details of it by clicking on the link to the left called "Digital Imaging Book"... Do us both a favor, and order a copy!! I edited and partially wrote a second book, titled "Medical Image Processing: Techniques and Applications", which was published by Springer in August 2011 - another good read!! And then I wrote a third book, an introductory textbook on Pattern Recognition and Classification, which was published in 2013. (Seems like I'll never learn. Writing books is such a solitary and underpaid occupation ... Actually, I think I've got book-writing out of my system now!).

I did a six month sabbatical (July 2009 to January 2010) at QUT (Queensland University of Technology - see QUT web news ) and IHBI (Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation - see IHBI Advances) in Brisbane, Australia as a Fulbright Senior Scholar. I had a very productive time, and was able to make side trips to New Zealand (see Keynote Speaker, IVCNZ 2009 ) and Malaysia. Have a look at my photos from this trip by clicking on the link to Photo Gallery on the left. (Ooops, removed ....)

I joined the Fulbright Specialist Roster as a specialist in Engineering Education/ Digital Imaging in 2013, and my first project was at the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) in Java, Indonesia. I'm preparing a second project (somewhere) for Spring 2018.
