Personal interests

Music

I am a huge music fan.  My favorite station for music is KEXP in Seattle.  I am especially fond of independent bands from the Northwest.  Among my favorite bands are (in no particular order): Modest Mouse, The Decemberists, the New Pornographers, Wilco, Built to Spill, Pavement, REM, The Meat Puppets, Elvis Costello, Guided By Voices, The Shins, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Son Volt, Rhett Miller, Old 97s, Rage Against the Machine, Uncle Tupelo, Talking Heads.

Now that we are living outside of L.A. we have many opportunities to see live music (but not enough time and money).

Colleges and Universities

Seattle University is my alma mater. With SU moving into NCAA Division I SU basketball is poised to make a run at a national championship...OK...well, to occasionally upset more prominent programs any way (Oregon State and Virginia this season alone). 

I earned my PhD at the University of Colorado. I became a Buffaloes fan during my five years in graduate school. We won a national championship while I was there and played for another. Grad students had a section on the 50 yard line.

Sports

I have been a fan of the Seattle Mariners since they came to town when I was a kid.  Most of that history has been one of futility. 

Is there something more pathetic than being a Mariners fan?  Yes indeed, being a Seahawks fan (again, a fan since the team came to town).  Generally speaking Seahawk teams have not played to their potential.  The Super Bowl was exciting (if disappointing in the end).
